parenthesis (Plural: parentheses)
- One of a pair of punctuation marks ( "(" and ")" ) used to enclose supplementary or explanatory material in a text; also used in mathematics to enclose a calculation that is to be carried out before an operation outside the parentheses, or to enclose the components of a vector or the elements of a matrix.
