Etymology
From French, irregular from Greek chilioi, thousand. The "correct" form would be chili-, resulting in forms such as chiliogram and chiliometer. In fact, one such form (lacking the connecting vowel -o-, which is explained at Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia) used to exist in English: chilihedron, meaning a thousand-faced solid.
- In the International System of Units and other metric systems of units, multiplying the unit to which it is attached by 1,000. Symbol: k
