Kanpo (漢方)/ Kanpo yaku (漢方薬)/ or Kampo

Kanpo is a Japanese system of prescribing herbal teas. These herbal teas are boiled medicines, mostly of plant origin also containing minerals and some animal components. The formula were recorded in the Han Dynasty according to two texts, the Shan Han Lun and the Kinki Yo Raku. These herbal teas were in usage before the texts, in the form of folk medicines; the texts codified the uses and standardized the preparation methods.

Kanpo employs a unique diagnostic procedure, and presents the formula in quality controlled formulations. It is probably the safest form of herbal medicine, and the easiest standardise.
