Etymology
jack + daw. The former element may refer either to its characteristic call, often represented as tchak-tchak, or to the name Jack. The latter, daw, means "jackdaw" in itself, from Old English daƿe, and is cognate with Old High German tahe, which through Middle High German tahele became modern German Dohle.
