The Euopean Union is a supranational organisation. It was created in the 1950s, with the idea of bringing together some old nations in a common endeavour. In the year 2004, 25 nations are European Union members: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.

Candidates for accession in 2007: Bulgaria, Romania

Other European countries which aren't members yet:

Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Norway, Russia, San Marino, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, Vatican City, Serbia and Montenegro.
