Wiktionary: Basic English template
From open-dictionary.com - the free dictionary.
Given the larger size of this list (as compared to say the Swadesh list, this page will be divided into four parts.
We could also add the various supplements to the Basic English lists later.
Ogden's categories are provided, but more detailed categories--which would be useful for alternative sorting (by specific themes such as "household items" or "animals"). Although others have done the work for categorizing these words alternatively, we need to find out whether these can be used since the full lists are copyrighted (even though the data has been arranged in a database). In any case, we can add our own categories for these items. See Instructions below.
As far as copyright for using the Basic English words themselves (and Ogden's categorization), The site manager of www.basiceng.com has said the following:
"Ogden copyrighted the wordlist as a means to control its application. That is, to keep people from making modifications and still use the Basic English name. Usage of the wordlist as is perfectly acceptable with appropriate credit to Ogden. and Basic English." So there's the credit... :) This prohibition then would seem not to forbid adding categories, or other words as long as they were marked as being additional.
Numbers for the equivalent Swadesh number have been included in the template in the event that someone wished to re-sort this list in a database, and add in the Swadesh words. Nothing needs to be added further to this column since all Swadesh numbers have been added. However, they would not need to be added to each template if someone wanted to remove them.
We hope that these lists will help serve as a means of displaying data from other languages as well, in order to help those wishing to learn various languages (especially if at once).
Please include pages below which use the above template to cross-reference definitions of Basic English words in other languages:
Germanic languages - Hamito-Semitic languages - Indo-Iranian languages - Sino-Tibetan languages - constructed languages etc.
Instructions
Here are the instructions for editing the following lists:
Extended2 A-K - Extended2 L-Z -
Extended 3 - Extended 4 - Extended 5
The first three columns should not be adjusted.
Categories in column 4 are to be collaboratively created here. Please be careful not to modify column 3 by accident. Column 4 categories should be useful for those wishing to re-sort this list in a database and learn words in multiple languages according to a given theme. This should be particularly useful as thematically associated vocabulary can be more easily rehearsed by the self-learner (e.g., when learning "household items", for example, one could look around one's house or think of such items and then see if one can say them in a given language or languages).
Subcategories in column 4 can be created by adding information in parenthesis following the main category within the column (e.g., "animals (mammals)"). Please list any categories or subcategories you have added here at the top (and reflect any changes in each section) so that the development of a logical and consistent set of categories can occur. Here is the current list: business, matter, mathematics, ....
Columns 5 and 6 can be used if there is a need for additional (unrelated) categorizations. Please list these categories here (and reflect the changes in each section): ....
The rest of the columns (#1-5) represent a template to which other languages can be added at other Basic English template pages. Since the categories here have not been finished, however, it may be ideal to wait for the categorizations to first be completed before starting these pages (unless the new language pages temporarily deleted these columns and added them later based on data at this list as it evolves.
