From the United States Army acronym "Absent Without Leave"

(Mil. and generic) Absent without leave (permission).
The US Army has a lot of AWOL soldiers.

(Mil.) The status of being absent from the command and control of a military organization without being placed on leave, detached to another unit, or otherwise receiving official sanction for an absence

Usage

The United States Marine Corps uses the term "UA" (Unauthorized Absence) instead of "AWOL".
